Every young pitcher wants to learn a nasty curveball. The truth is that the pitchers who go the furthest are the ones who master a fastball and a changeup first, then add movement later, on a healthy arm. This guide shows you exactly how to grip each pitch, with a clear diagram for every one, and it lays out the safe order to learn them along with the pitch counts that protect a growing arm. Learn the grips, respect the workload, and the strikeouts take care of themselves.
What is the safe way to learn pitches? Master the four-seam fastball first, then the two-seam, then the changeup. Hold off on the curveball until around age 14 and the slider until the mid-teens, after a pitcher owns a reliable fastball and changeup. Above all, manage the workload. Overuse and pitching while tired hurt young arms far more than any single pitch does.
Here is how to hold each pitch. On every diagram, the solid navy pads show where your index (I), middle (M), and ring (R) fingers go, and the dashed pad shows the thumb (T) underneath the ball.
The grip. Place your index and middle fingers ACROSS the seams, where the horseshoe runs perpendicular to your fingers, with the thumb underneath for a stable base. Hold it back in the fingers, not jammed into the palm.
What it does. The straightest, fastest, most accurate pitch in baseball. Four seams cut the air on every rotation, so the ball fights gravity and holds its line. This is the foundation. Command it before anything else.
Fingers across the seams. Loose grip, firm wrist.
The grip. Lay your index and middle fingers ON TOP of the two seams where they run closest together, moving with the seams instead of across them. A little tighter than the four-seam.
What it does. A touch slower than the four-seam with late movement, usually running and sinking toward the arm side. Great for getting weak ground balls once a pitcher can throw strikes with the four-seam.

The grip. Grip it deeper in the hand with three fingers on top. The popular circle change makes an OK sign with the thumb and index finger on the side of the ball. Throw it with the exact same arm speed as your fastball.
What it does. Looks like a fastball out of the hand but arrives 8 to 12 mph slower, so the hitter swings early. This is the off-speed pitch to master after the fastball. It uses a normal, arm-friendly throwing motion, which is why coaches teach it long before any breaking ball.
Same arm speed. The grip does the work, not the wrist.
The grip. The curveball sets the middle finger along a seam with the index resting beside it and the thumb under the ball, finishing with a karate-chop wrist. The slider sits between a fastball and a curve with pressure on the outside of the middle finger.
What it does. Breaking balls spin sideways or down to fool a hitter, but they ask the wrist, elbow, and forearm to do something a fastball never does. Because of that added stress and the command they demand, these are the pitches to hold off on until a pitcher is older and has a real fastball and changeup first.

Pitches are best learned in the order that builds arm strength and command without rushing a young arm into high-stress movement. The chart below is based on the ages that USA Baseball Pitch Smart suggests for introducing each pitch. Think of these as guideposts, not hard birthdays. A pitcher earns the next pitch by commanding the last one.

Ages are general guidance from USA Baseball Pitch Smart. Follow your player's league rules and a coach's read of their mechanics before adding a pitch.
Here is the part most people get backwards. For years the curveball got blamed for youth arm injuries, but the research does not clearly support that. A well-thrown curveball is not obviously harder on the arm than a fastball. What the studies point to again and again is overuse. The pitchers who get hurt are the ones who throw too many pitches, pitch while their arm is tired, play catcher on their off days, and pitch year-round across multiple teams.
That is good news, because workload is something you can control. Count the pitches, respect the rest days, and never let a young pitcher throw through arm pain. Do that, and you protect the arm far better than banning any single pitch ever could.
These are the daily maximums from USA Baseball Pitch Smart, the guidelines used by Little League and most youth organizations. A pitch count is a ceiling, not a target. If a pitcher is laboring, pull them well before the limit.

The number of pitches thrown decides how many days a young pitcher rests before taking the mound again. Here are the required rest days for the youngest arms.

Thresholds shift slightly for ages 15 and up. Check the official USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines for the full chart, and always defer to your league's rules.
Get the fastball dialed in before you branch out. A pitcher who can throw a four-seam for strikes to both sides of the plate is ready for a two-seam and a changeup. Learn the changeup by feel, throwing it at the same arm speed as your fastball until the deeper grip does the work for you. When the time comes for a curveball, learn it with a coach watching, in short doses, so the mechanics are right from day one. Reps, not intensity, build a good pitcher. Slow and healthy beats fast and hurt every single time.

The four-seam fastball. It is the straightest and most accurate pitch, and it teaches the clean, over-the-top throwing motion that every other pitch is built on. A young pitcher should be able to throw fastball strikes on both sides of the plate before adding anything else. The next pitch to learn is the changeup, not a breaking ball.
The changeup. It arrives slower than a fastball to fool the hitter, but it is thrown with the same normal arm motion as a fastball, so it does not add the wrist and elbow stress that a curveball or slider does. That is why coaches teach the changeup years before any breaking ball.
Most guidelines suggest waiting until about age 14 to introduce the curveball, after a pitcher has a reliable fastball and changeup. The bigger point is that overuse, not the curveball itself, is the main driver of youth arm injuries. A 12-year-old who is not close to the daily pitch limit, is not throwing through pain, and has clean mechanics is at far less risk than one who is overthrowing any pitch. When in doubt, wait, and talk to the coach.
On its own, a well-thrown curveball is not clearly more dangerous than a fastball in the research. The real risk factors are throwing too many pitches, pitching while fatigued, pitching year-round, and playing on multiple teams at once. A curveball becomes a problem when it is thrown by a tired arm with poor mechanics. Manage the workload first, then the pitch selection.
Under the widely used USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines, a 9 to 10 year old should throw no more than 75 pitches in a day. Rest also matters. After 21 to 35 pitches a young pitcher needs one day off, after 36 to 50 pitches two days, after 51 to 65 pitches three days, and 66 or more pitches requires four days of rest before pitching again.
Grip the ball deeper in your hand, either with three fingers on top or with a circle change, where your thumb and index finger form an OK sign on the side of the ball. The key is to throw it with the exact same arm speed and motion as your fastball. The deeper grip takes speed off the ball for you, so you never have to slow your arm down, which is what tips off the hitter.
